Waste Classification and Management

  • Waste Classification and Management

According to the Waste Disposal Act, waste is classified into the following categories:

    1. General Waste: Refers to waste other than industrial waste (also known as household waste).
    2. Industrial Waste: Refers to waste generated from industrial activities that is not produced by employees’ daily living, including hazardous industrial waste and general industrial waste.
    (1) Hazardous Industrial Waste: Waste generated by industries that is toxic or dangerous, with concentrations or quantities sufficient to affect human health or pollute the environment.
    (2) General Industrial Waste: Waste generated by industries other than hazardous industrial waste.

According to current regulations, household waste must be sorted into at least three categories: general waste, recyclables, and food waste. After sorting and packaging, waste should be collected either by municipal garbage trucks or contracted private waste collectors. Violations of Article 12 of the Waste Disposal Act may result in fines ranging from NT$1,200 to NT$6,000 under Article 50.

As stipulated by law, the university is classified as an industrial entity and must委託 private contractors to collect and dispose of its general waste, as local municipal offices do not provide collection services. Therefore, since 2012, the university has outsourced household waste collection and disposal to private contractors.

Waste generated in laboratory and practical training sites is primarily hazardous industrial waste, including laboratory waste and infectious medical waste. Since 2007, infectious medical waste has been handled by qualified waste disposal companies. Since 2015, laboratory waste has been processed through the Ministry of Education-supported joint treatment system managed by the Environmental Resources Research and Management Center at National Cheng Kung University.
